Koufie tips Appiah for Ghana coaching post

Published on: 20 September 2011

Ex-Ghana FA boss Ben Koufie has tipped Kwesi Appiah as the coach of the country’s senior national team in future.

Appiah, an ex-international, led Ghana's home-based men Olympic team to win gold at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo on Saturday.

The Black Meteors snatched a late equaliser against South Africa to draw 1-1 before going on to  beat the Amagluglug 4-2 on penalties.

Appiah's feat will boost the Ghana FA’s quest to stop hiring expatriate coaches after the 2014 Fifa World Cup finals.

Koufie, who works as a Caf Technical Instructor, believes the former defender has improved tremendously since his appointment as assistant Ghana coach three years ago.

"I think he is definitely an elite coach," Koufie said.

"He has worked under two Serbian coaches and learnt a lot from them and when it comes to time for him to show his worth, he does it.

"When the time comes for him to apply for the Black Stars, I think he will do it."

Koufie is also confident the Ghana Under-23 coach can help raise the profile of indigenous coaches.

"He's acquitted himself creditably with this. The association can look at how he works and promote him to another level," he added.
