Kwesi Appiah set for legal showdown with Ghana FA over unpaid wages

Published on: 16 March 2020

Former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has drawn the legal battle lines with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as his lawyers have written to the federation demanding over $300,000 in unpaid wages.

The action by the unassuming coach is the brazen evidence that he is ready to drag the federation to court for the outstanding monies owed him, three months since his tenure expired.

Appiah’s highly-regarded lawyer Thaddeus Sorry has written to the GFA demanding that the federation pays his client's unpaid salaries, bonuses and sign-on fees.

The coach looks to have been sparked into the legal action by a letter that sources close to the coach say was meant to embarrass him by asking him to return a GFA vehicle in his possession.

The 59-year-old, who was on a $35,000 monthly salary, is owed five months’ salary which totals $175,000.

Outstanding bonuses and sign-on fees takes the amount to over $300,000 which the financially handicapped GFA would struggle to pay upfront.

Ghanasoccernet.com understands, Kwesi Appiah was seeking an amicable settlement to the solution but has been angered by a GFA directive he thought was calculated to embarrass him.

The GFA wrote to Appiah two weeks ago demanding he returns everything handed to him which aided his work as coach of the senior national team.

Appiah complied and on Friday he returned the official car to the GFA secretariat. For the house given to him by the government, Appiah has also packed out.

Kwesi Appiah was head coach for two-and-half years before being replaced by his assistant Charles Akonnor.

It was his second stint as Black Stars coach. His first stint was between 2012 and 2014.
