La Liga president Javier Tebas has requested an investigation into Barcelona's latest financial reports amid concerns over the truth behind the numbers.
Former president Jose Maria Bartomeu recently accused Barcelona of exaggerating their financial woes, suggesting that the €1.35m debt claimed by current chief Joan Laporta is twice as high as the actual figure.
Bartomeu questioned how Barcelona had arrived at the figures mentioned in their financial report, and that appears to have given Tebas cause for concern as La Vanguardia claim he is pushing for an investigation into the results.
Tebas disagrees with Barcelona's claims and has requested an audit from the Superior Sports Council to get the bottom of the issue.
The La Liga chief has previously questioned Barcelona's public statements about their finances.
"About Barça I am more concerned about the institutional crisis that I see than about the economic situation," he told L'Equipe.
"We have their figures, Barça was not almost dead, if not, they could not have received a loan of more than €500m. Barça is not so bad, although it is worse than Real Madrid."
Despite claiming to be in financial ruin, Laporta is planning to make three signings in the January transfer window, with Beijing Sinobo Guoan striker Cedric Bakambu and Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman on the radar.
There have also been plenty of rumours suggesting Barcelona are ready to spend a lot of money in January. Dani Olmo of RB Leipzig and Manchester City's Raheem Sterling have been touted as targets, but both would cost Barcelona a pretty penny to sign.
