10 April 2019.-LaLiga's commitment to protecting the competition's audiovisual rights, with the backing of the Alliance against pay-TV piracy (Alianza), has received yet another boost. The Peruvian National Institute for the Defence of Competition and Intellectual Property Protection (INDECOPI) has granted five precautionary measures in LaLiga's favour in an operation involving the collaboration of Alianza and the issue of orders to block access to six websites which illegally streamed LaLiga Santander fixtures, as well as large quantities of other audiovisual content.

The following blocked websites featured amongst those receiving the highest number of user visits throughout Peru, recording almost 3.5 million visits each month:

LaLiga's collaboration with Alianza represents major progress in the institution's battle against audiovisual piracy. In reference to the operation, the director of LaLiga's audiovisual department, Melcior Soler, commented that, "We're really satisfied with the result of this joint endeavour with Alianza. As a part of the entertainment industry, LaLiga will continue to fight against audiovisual piracy." "It's a crime and it must be treated as such. We at LaLiga are fully committed to eradicating a scourge that's affecting the world game. As an institution, we have invested significant human and technical resources in tackling audiovisual piracy," stated Soler.

Alianza seeks to protect the quality of audiovisual content and the industry as a whole, as well as clubs and football associations, whilst also aiming to safeguard the rights of fans who legally purchase subscription TV packages in order to watch their team in action. "These precautionary measures represent a fantastic achievement and mark a significant precedent, in view of the fact that they were enforced in a very short period of time. The pay-TV industry will continue to work together through Alianza to promote compliance with the law and combat signal theft and any other forms of piracy," declared Marta Ochoa, executive co-director at Alianza and the director of DIRECTV Latin America's anti-piracy strategy.

The granting of these measures by INDECOPI is an important success story in the battle against audiovisual piracy in Latin America and will serve to consolidate the status of the blocking of access as a means to combating piracy. In addition, this is the first time that INDECOPI has authorised the blocking of two similar websites under the same precautionary measure, which could see a precedent established that would allow offending websites that are similar in nature to be included in the same operation and therefore speed up the whole process. The measure has been promptly implemented by Peru's leading internet service providers.

LaLiga's commitment over the course of the last five seasons to the battle against piracy has revolved around investing significant efforts, both in terms of human and technical resources. These endeavours have seen access to over 30 illegal streaming sites blocked in Spain and the closure of almost 20. The organisation is also carrying out exhaustive efforts beyond Spanish borders. The latest example being the closure of three IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) platforms in Brazil which registered a total of over 1.5 million visits per month and boasted 8,000 illegal subscribers between them. The forms of piracy that LaLiga most commonly finds itself battling against are those involving streaming sites, applications, unauthorised content posted on social media, illegal satellite devices and illegal IPTV platforms.
