Ghanaian defender Tariq Lamptey’s late goal couldn’t prevent Brighton & Hove Albion from exiting the EFL Cup after a spirited 3-2 defeat to Liverpool.
Playing the full 90 minutes, Lamptey showcased resilience and skill, ultimately netting in the final moments to give Brighton a glimmer of hope.
The second half saw Liverpool's Cody Gakpo open the scoring just seconds in, brilliantly assisted by Tyler Morton. Gakpo struck again in the 63rd minute, doubling Liverpool’s lead. Brighton clawed back when Simon Adingra pounced on a loose ball to make it 2-1 in the 81st minute, keeping the contest alive. However, Luis Diaz restored Liverpool’s two-goal cushion with a smart finish in the 85th minute.
As full-time neared, Lamptey’s deflected left-footed shot found the bottom corner in the 90th minute, sparking hopes of a Brighton comeback. Despite their late surge, the Seagulls couldn't equalize, sending Liverpool through to the fifth round.
Brighton will refocus on their league fixture, facing Liverpool again on November 2nd.
