Former Berekum Chelsea defender Lee Addy, who was part of Ghanaian footballers who were stranded in Ethiopia due to the closure of the borders by the government to stop the importation of the coronavirus, has expressed his appreciation to the government and Ghana Football Association (GFA) for playing a major role in their return to the country.

The stranded footballers led by former Black Stars defender Lee Addy sent an SOS message pleading to be repatriated home.

Their plea quickly got a response with the Ghana FA, Sports Ministry as they liaised with Ghana's Embassy in Ethiopia to airlift the players back home.

Addy could not hide his delight after landing in the West African country, expressing gratitude to the government and the GFA for coming to their aid.

“We paid for our ticket cost but the government played a major role in terms of organization. We the senior players paid for some of the players who couldn’t afford the cost,” Addy told OTEC FM.

“Three (3) players were left behind because they needed to negotiate with their clubs for contract renewal. We came straight to Prampram with some students who were also stranded in Addis Ababa and South Africa” He added

“We are pleased of what the government and the GFA have done for us, in fact, we didn’t expect them for helping us this way,” he deduced.

The players have been quarantined at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram

The 14 days quarantine is part of measures put in place by the government to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

They will be the second batch to be quarantined at the facility since the Ghana FA offered that centre to the government.
