Leeds 'eyeing Assombalonga transfer as replacement for Arsenal's Nketiah'

Leeds want Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga to boost their stuttering promotion hopes following the departure of their Ghanaina attacker Eddie Nketiah.

Marcelo Bielsa's second-placed side have won only once in seven Championship games.

And they have not scored in their last three games in all competitions.

They want a new striker in before hosting Millwall next Tuesday after Nketiah's loan was cut short and he returned to Arsenal .

More firepower would also ease the burden on 10-goal Patrick Bamford, who missed a penalty in the defeat at QPR and has been criticised by fans for his finishing.

DR Congo international striker Assombalonga,27, has 18 months left on his Boro contract until June 2021 after joining for £15million from Nottingham Forest in July 2017.

He has six goals this season but has not played since December 7 after an ankle injury.

He returned to training on Sunday and is expected to be fit next week.
