Leeds United 0-3 Aston Villa: Jesse Marsch remains winless as Whites boss

Published on: 10 March 2022

Leeds United's startlingly poor form continued with a 3-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa.

Jesse Marsch has now lost both of his opening games after replacing Marcelo Bielsa in the Elland Road dugout, and the Whites' only consolation of the evening was that relegation rivals Norwich and Watford were both beaten on Thursday too.

Leeds were furious that they weren't a man up in the opening exchanges when Villa forward Ollie Watkins hacked Luke Ayling's ankles with a challenge that may have been deemed a red card offence on another day, but referee Simon Hooper opted to only dish out a yellow.

Soon after, Villa were ahead through a slice of fortune. Matty Cash rolled the ball back to Philippe Coutinho on the edge of the box and while his strike wasn't the fiercest, it took a huge telling deflection off Pascal Struijk and past Illan Meslier.

Steven Gerrard's men dominated the rest of the first half and Leeds went into the break without having registered a shot.

Marsch threw on fan favourites Joe Gelhardt and the returning Patrick Bamford in search of a valuable equaliser, but Villa doubled their lead after Cash cut inside the helpless Junior Firpo and buried at Meslier's near post.

Substitute Calum Chambers rounded off the scoring with a wonderfully whipped strike on the edge of the Leeds box, sentencing the hosts to a fifth successive loss.

Meanwhile, Villa moved back into the top half due to Southampton's loss at home to Newcastle.
