Ex-Ghana U20 defender Joseph Adjei has reaped the benefits of returning home to play in the Ghanaian top-flight as it has earned him a call-up to the senior national team for the first time in his career.

The powerful centre-back has been rewarded by the Ghana national team handlers following his impressive showing in the Ghana Premier League after his recent return to the country to play in the local league despite interest from several clubs abroad.

Adjei, a former Ghana U20 international, returned home at the start of the season to sign for ambitious top-flight campaigners Legon Cities as he has been the towering influence in their impressive performances in their matches.

His showing for the Accra-based side has gone unnoticed which has resulted in Akonnor's decision to call him to the Black Stars which also means a natural progression for the player who has impressed for various youth national teams for Ghana.

Adjei will now have the chance to run shoulders with the top Ghanaian players who ply their trade in Europe for top sides as the Black Stars prepare to face South Africa in their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier to be played in the Southern African country.

The 24-year-old joined the Accra-based outfit with 16 games into the season he has established himself as an instrumental figure in the team, having exhibited his versatility after being deployed in several positions.

The defender's versatility will come in handy for coach Akonnor who is carefully weighing his options as some Europe-based in key midfield and defensive positions are unlikely to turn up for the match because of travel restrictions in various countries because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Adjei's decision to return to the country to play in the local league has been recognised and rewarded having played in several countries abroad following his move after excelling for Ghana's U20 national team.

The defender played for Bahraini side Al Malkiya after moving from Cape Town City FC in South Africa.

The centre-back also played for Omani giants Al Oroubah Sports Club and USL side OKC Energy.

Adjei remains focused on helping Legon Cities make an impact in this season's campaign after struggling at the start of the season with the newly assembled squad.

The former Ghana U20 star is good enough to play for the Black Stars having gained immense experience playing abroad and some national teams in Ghana.

In 2015, the former Wa All Stars centre-back was selected to represent Ghana at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
