Leicester City 'are closing in on a deal to sign free agent Ryan Bertrand' after leaving Southampton

Leicester City are on the verge of signing Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand on a free transfer, according to reports.

Sportsmail reported last week that the former Chelsea star was a target for the Midlands outfit after failing to agree a new contract with the Saints. The 31-year-old will leave St Mary's when his deal expires on June 30.

That development has cleared the way for the Foxes to pounce, and Leicester are now closing in on his signature after leading the race to sign him amid interest from a host of suitors, according to Goal.

Leicester had been competing with Arsenal for Bertrand, but he has decided to move to the King Power, the report adds, claiming that he was also being pursued by AC Milan and Monaco.

He will become a Leicester player on July 1, it says, after his deal with Southampton runs out, and could provide a boost to boss Brendan Rodgers after long term injuries to left-backs Timothy Castagne and James Justin.

Castagne has been ruled out of Euro 2020 after a double fracture to his eye socket in Belgium's 3-0 win over Russia and will be a concern for the start of the Premier League campaign and requires surgery.

Justin, meanwhile, injured his anterior cruciate ligament and faces a spell out.

Bertrand isn't the only deal Leicester are looking to wrap up, with the club in advanced talks to sign Red Bull Salzburg forward Patson Daka in a £25m switch.

They had been pursuing Celtic's Odsonne Edouard before becoming frustrated by negotiations and switching their attentions to the Zambian international, who is said to be interesting Chelsea and Liverpool after scoring 34 goals last season for the Austrian club.

Leicester have also agreed a £20m deal with Lille to sign Boubakary Soumare, as Sportsmail revealed last month.
