Leicester defender Luke Thomas in contention for first senior England call-up

Leicester defender Luke Thomas is in contention for a first senior England call-up when Gareth Southgate names his squad for friendlies against Ivory Coast and Switzerland.

The Foxes academy product was watched by Southgate when they were beaten 3-2 by Tottenham on Wednesday and has delivered a number of impressive displays this season.

With Ben Chilwell out for the rest of the campaign with a knee injury, and Luke Shaw having a difficult season at Manchester United, Southgate may turn to Thomas in the spring as he prepares for the World Cup later this year.

Thomas was expected to compete with Ryan Bertrand for a first-team spot this term after the latter's arrival last summer but Bertrand's struggles – coupled with Thomas' good form – have given the 20-year-old an extended run in the team.

Thomas has already played for England from Under-18 level through to Under-21 and as long as he maintains form and fitness, he has put himself in a strong position for selection.
