Leon Goretzka not interested in Bayern Munich exit

Published on: 22 July 2021

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka is not considering leaving the club, despite talks over a new deal with the German giants stalling.

The 26-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his contract, and despite Bayern's best efforts, he is yet to put pen to paper on an extension, believing his emergence as one of the world's best midfielders justifies a higher salary.

Goretzka has attracted interest from Man Utd

Manchester United are keen to take advantage of that and have provisionally promised Goretzka a cool £200,000-a-week if he joins as a free agent next summer.

However, according to Goal and Spox, the 26-year-old is not really paying any attention to outside interest and is instead solely focused on thrashing out a new deal with Bayern, with whom he wants to stay for a while longer.

Those in charge at Bayern - CEO Oliver Kahn, sports director Hasan Salihamidzic and president Herbert Hainer - are all confident that Goretzka is not angling for an exit, unlike both David Alaba and Kingsley Coman.

Talks are ongoing between Goretzka and Bayern in an attempt to find a compromise which is far likelier than earlier reports have suggested.

Goretzka had been claimed to be pushing for over £300,000-a-week in any new contract, with Bayern's weekly limit reported as closer to £200,000, but such claims have been debunked and such a gulf in demands is not there.

All the signs suggest Goretzka, who is also interesting Real Madrid and Barcelona, will stay at the Allianz Arena, where Julian Naglesmann is looking forward to counting on the midfielder for many more years.

"I would be very happy to have many years of the hopeful era together with Leon because I think very highly of him, because I will have an excellent collaboration with him and because he is one the most dangerous midfielders in Europe," the boss said.

Goretzka was touted as a replacement for Paul Pogba

It means United will likely be forced to look elsewhere in their search for a new midfielder, which could shoot up the priority list if Paul Pogba does not commit his future to the club.

Paris Saint-Germain are pushing hard for the Frenchman and are also locked in a battle with United over Rennes starlet Eduardo Camavinga.
