Liverpool and Atletico Madrid match caused 41 additional deaths from coronavirus

More than two months on, the clash between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid continues to be shrouded in coronavirus controversy.

A report carried out by Edge Health, which analysed data from the British National Health Service (NHS), has concluded that the match cause "41 additional deaths" from coronavirus.

The fixture took place on the March 11, with health warnings already having been given about the virus and two days before Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez declared a state of emergency in Spain.

According to data in the Edge Health report, published in The Sunday Times, Spain had approximately 640,000 positive cases on March 11, while the United Kingdom had 100,000.

The British government supported the idea of playing the game behind closed doors and a month after the game, while the mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, stated that Atletico fans travelling to Liverpool for the match was a mistake.
