Liverpool to submit plans for Anfield expansion this week

Published on: 30 November 2020

Liverpool will submit their planning application for the further redevelopment of Anfield this week.

The planning application for the Anfield Road stand had originally been suspended in spring this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, details will be handed over to Liverpool City Council, and approval would see the ground's capacity expanded by around 7,000.

That would see Anfield's capacity increased to more than 61,000 - giving it the third largest in the top flight.

Only Tottenham Hotspur stadium and Old Trafford have a higher capacity - with the north London ground holding 62,062 and Manchester United's home ground  holding 74,879.

'The last nine months without fans in our stadium has driven home our commitment to making Anfield accessible to more fans than ever before,' said the club's managing director Andy Hughes.

'While a high level of uncertainty remains around Covid-19, we would like to be in a position to move ahead with the proposed redevelopment as soon as the time is right, which is why we've decided to move forward with submitting the planning application.'
