Liverpool transfer round-up: Salah linked with move, Mbappe latest

Published on: 24 November 2020

Liverpool showed that there is plenty of quality in their squad after they won 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday evening. Despite missing a host of key stars through injury, the Reds comfortably defeated a Leicester side who came into the weekend as league leaders.

Nonetheless, there’s every chance that the club will look to strengthen in the January transfer market, particularly as key men Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are facing very lengthy spells on the side lines.

And there’s never a shortage of rumours and gossip for the big teams anyway, is there? With that in mind, here’s a selection of the latest Liverpool transfer news.

Klopp can convince Mbappe

It doesn’t matter how many times Jurgen Klopp tells interviewers that there is no chance of the transfer happening, the rumours that Kylian Mbappe might join Liverpool refuse to die.

In fairness, it does seem likely that the young World Cup winner will be heading somewhere soon, as Paris Saint-Germain seem set to sell the star next summer rather than lose him for nothing when his contract expires the following year.

And if Liverpool can somehow find the money to make the deal a possibility, then Premier League Golden Boot winner Kevin Phillips believes that the presence of Klopp will mean Mbappe will be willing to complete the move.

“I think Klopp can persuade Mbappe him to come,” Phillips said when speaking to Football Insider. “Klopp has enough pulling power to convince any player to come to Liverpool,” he added.

James makes surprising Salah claim

If Liverpool are serious about signing Mbappe then they will need to raise some serious transfer funds, and that would surely mean parting ways with one of their current crop of stars.

The club’s former goalkeeper David James believes that his old side would listen to offers for Mohamed Salah “if the price is right”.

“I don’t think Liverpool are dependent on Salah and that’s a good thing for Jurgen Klopp,” James told Stadium Astro (and reported by the Liverpool Echo ). “I don’t think he’s indispensable.”

Pplenty of Liverpool fans will disagree over that one.

Has Wijnaldum agreed to leave?

Back to our old friend Kevin Phillips, and the former Sunderland striker has also been giving his opinion on Gini Wijnaldum’s contract situation.

The Dutchman is in his fifth season at Anfield, but is out of contract at the end of 2020/21. With his former Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman in the Barcelona hot seat, there have been plenty of rumours that Wijnaldum may follow him to Catalonia next summer.

And as far as Phillips is concerned, it could be a done deal behind the scenes already. “I am reading that he has turned down a lucrative new deal so there must be something in the pipeline,” he said.

“It is a shame for Jurgen Klopp because Wijnaldum has been a top player for Liverpool.”
