Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp spoke to the media ahead of the game against Wolves and much of the focus was on his disappointed that Premier League shareholders did not vote to increase the number of substitutions per game to five and said England would suffer at the Euros due to the congested match schedule.
Klopp on the injury/substitution debate
England's top flight returned to three substitutions per game this season even though the option was on the table to continue with five, a temporary rule other top European leagues have implemented after the pandemic condensed their seasons.
"It's not a good sign. It shows they ignore player welfare... So many players are on edge, you don't know who will go down first," Klopp told the gathered reporters.
"Nobody thought (the vote) would go through. The facts were if we voted (last month) it would have gone through, but that it hasn't happened since is a sign the shareholders see it different to their managers.
"All teams will have to play every three days now... Next summer it will be a problem for (England manager) Gareth Southgate. Most of them have played so far three times a week, so Gareth will get what we can give him, and that's an FA problem."
Klopp said that Fulham boss Scott Parker mentioned at the manager's meeting that having only three substitutes helped the London club, but the German boss said it was no longer a debate about a team's advantage but one of player welfare.
"Because we haven't voted yesterday, it doesn't make the problem go away," Klopp added.
"It's about all the players and load management, nothing else. Not for an advantage, for dealing with the covid problem in the best way. We cannot ignore it."
Liverpool have been hit by a number of injuries to key players, but Klopp said right back Trent Alexander-Arnold and midfielder Naby Keita could make their returns.
"There's a chance Naby and Trent are in the squad, but if they can start and play 90 minutes, I don't know."
Wolves without striker JÃmenez
Wolverhampton Wanderers' Raul JÃmenez is making excellent progress following surgery on a fractured skull but manager Nuno Espirito Santo said on Friday it was too early to set a timeframe for the Mexican striker's return.
Jimenez, 29, was injured after a clash of heads with Arsenal defender David Luiz at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. He received lengthy treatment on the pitch before being taken off and rushed to hospital but could be discharged as early as next week.
"It was very serious and everyone was afraid, everyone was worried. As the days go by and, knowing he is being taken good care of, we have been able to return to a normal situation," Nuno said.
"Now we have to stick together and all our thoughts and prayers go to Raul. It's too early to think about it (JÃmenez's return). He is recovering well. It's positive but we know it's a serious situation.
"We are not allowed to visit him, what Raúl needs is the company and love of his family. He needs to deal with this situation with his loved ones."
Diogo Jota, who has scored nine goals since joining Liverpool from Wolves in the close season, is set to line up for the first time against his former club and Nuno lauded the 24-year-old forward for hitting the ground running at the Merseyside outfit.
"We are proud and happy Diogo is doing well. He is a fantastic player and a fantastic boy. We shared so many things which will never be forgotten," Nuno said.
"We know his characteristics but we are going to face Liverpool so we have to be aware of their qualities, Diogo plus all the other talented players Liverpool have." (h/t by Arvind Sriram)
