Local players must be given opportunity at Black Stars – Benjamin Asare

Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has made a strong case for the inclusion of local players in the national team.

The Hearts of Oak shot stopper excelled in his maiden call-up after keeping clean sheets against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The 32-year-old kept the post in the game against the Chadians at the Accra Sports Stadium as the Black Stars recorded an emphatic 5-0 win.

Asare again kept the post as Ghana secured a hard-fought 3-0 win against Madagascar.

Speaking to 3Sports, the former Great Olympics goalkeeper said local players deserve a chance to showcase their talents if they are performing well.

"I am happy with the confidence they have in me and the support. I am happy that I lived up to their expectation. If a local player is good, he deserves a platform," Asare said.

"Sometimes people think once you are a local player, the national team will be difficult, but we are very determined,” he added.

Following his exploits, Otto Addo confirmed that Benjamin Asare will remain as the first choice goalkeeper for the Black Stars.

He is now expected to keep the post against Chad and Mali in the next round of the qualifiers in September.
