Lucky punter is on course to win £12,500 from 50p accumulator if Atletico Madrid win LaLiga

A lucky punter is hoping for the perfect climax to the football season after a 50p bet left him on course to scoop £12,500 if Atletico Madrid win the Spanish title.

Carl Edwards, a 59-year-old sex toy salesman, couldn't believe his eyes when he dug out his betting slips from last summer and found one included the winners of all English divisions and La Liga.

So far, he has correctly predicted Manchester City, Norwich, Hull and Cheltenham as champions of their respective leagues as part of the 50p accumulator bet with Coral.

He is now eagerly anticipating the crunch conclusion of the Spanish top flight, which will go down to the final day this weekend.

Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid are top of the table on 83 points ahead of giants Real Madrid on 81 and Barcelona who sit in third place on 76.

As Carl put the bet on the old fashioned way by writing a slip out instead of online he has no option to cash out so everything is riding on Atletico keeping their nerve.

Carl, of Handsworth, Birmingham, who runs adult store Direct Pleasure, said: 'I'm a nervous wreck at the moment.

'I almost had a heart attack when Barcelona let a goal in during the last minute the other day.

'I've never won a bet like this in my life and to think I could make £12,500 from 50p is amazing.

'Especially after the year I've had after lockdown, I do all the markets in the Midlands and they have been closed so we have not been able to work for nearly a year.

'However the sex toy side of the business has exploded during lockdown because everyone has been stuck inside.

'Perhaps I should not have told everyone about the bet because I will have a line round the block of people wanting to borrow a few quid.

'I think the whole of Handsworth is supporting Atletico Madrid and I am delighted the final game will be happening when the pubs are back open.

'It will be the party of the year in my local The Calthorpe Arms if I win.'
