Luton and Bournemouth play out stalemate

Luton and Bournemouth managed only six shots on target between them

Second-placed Bournemouth lost ground on Championship leaders Norwich despite battling to a useful draw at Luton.

The Hatters came closest to scoring in the first half when Danny Hylton's effort from just inside the box was brilliantly saved by Asmir Begovic.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was in impressive form for the hosts and there was an anxious moment for the visitors when his low cross narrowly evaded both Hylton and James Collins, while substitute Sam Nombe had a late shot smothered by the Bournemouth keeper.

Jason Tindall's Cherries had the edge in possession and twice as many attempts as Luton but created few clear openings and are now five points behind Norwich, who beat Cardiff in Saturday's early kick-off, after their fifth successive clean sheet.

Luton stay 14th after failing to score for the ninth time in the league this season, though Nathan Jones will be encouraged by his side more than matching their promotion-chasing opponents.

    Relive Saturday's EFL action

Phillip Billing's first-half strike over the bar from inside the area was arguably the closest Bournemouth came to breaking the deadlock at Kenilworth Road.

It was the first league meeting between the sides since January 2009 - when both were in the fourth tier - with both meetings that season also ending in draws.

While the Cherries players took a knee before kick-off to show their opposition to racial inequality, Luton opted to stand in a line with arms linked.

Luton manager Nathan Jones told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"Beforehand, we knew we were up against a side with a great standard of players, so we probably would have taken a point.

"But as the game went on I probably wouldn't have taken a point because we had better situations, we got in behind their back three and just couldn't find the right ball.

"I'm proud of the performance because they will go up and because they have enough firepower, so for us it's a positive."

Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall told BBC Radio Solent:

"I think we might look back and think it's a good point because it was a difficult final game in a difficult block of fixtures.

"These are a difficult side to play against with their style of football and it's the worst pitch we've played on this season.

"They've had some good results here, so for us to come here and not concede is a big plus, it's just a shame we couldn't find something in the final third."
