Madrid mayor on Atletico's UCL chances: This time referee won't be in charge

Published on: 24 May 2020

The mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, believes that Atletico Madrid are in the best position to win this year's Champions League.

Martinez-Almeida is an Atletico fan and he made a tongue-in-cheek comment about Mark Clattenburg, who admitted to making a mistake for Real Madrid's goal in the 2016 Champions League final.

"It's going to be Atletico's Champions League," he told Cadena COPE.

"We've knocked out the holders [Liverpool] in the most unusual season ever.

"The only team who has qualified for the next [round] is Atletico.

"It's going to be third time lucky for us, and this time in a Madrid vs Atletico final, Clattenburg won't be in charge."

It's clear that the mayor wants the best for all the teams in his city, despite having a red-and-white heart, and he would like to see Real Madrid overcome Manchester City and make it an all-Madrid affair in the final.
