Maldini: AC Milan have European DNA

Former AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini insisted that the club are treating the Europa League as an important opportunity.

The Rossoneri began their campaign with a 1-0 win over Dudelange, and go into the competition as one of the favourites.

For sporting strategy director Maldini, who won five Champions League titles with Milan, lifting the Europa League would represent the first step in reaffirming the club’s continental presence.

“It is nice to return to European football,” the former Diavolo captain told Sky Sport Italia before kick off in Luxembourg.

“Milan has European DNA and we are taking this competition seriously. We are building towards something important and in our players and coach [Gennaro Gattuso] we have good foundations.”

Maldini is Milan’s most decorated player, having lifted seven Scudetti in addition to his five European crowns.

The Rossoneri icon scored 33 goals from defence in 902 appearances between 1985 and 2009.

Following Thursday’s victory over Dudelange, Milan welcome Greek champions Olympiacos next in Group F, before taking on Real Betis of Spain.
