Malian international footballer Bourama Doumbia has suffered a gunshot in his leg following the political protests in the West African country.

Thousands have been demonstrating since last Friday to demand the President resign over the country’s long-running jihadist conflict and economic woes.

Doumbia, 22, who plays for Djoliba AC said he was going outside to see what is happening only to be met with a gun shot in his left thigh.

According to the Mali Football Federation President Mamoutou Toure, the midfielder is in stable condition and is receiving treatment.

“I have just spoken with Bourama Doumbia, the Malian U23 international player who was injured on Saturday. He is doing better. I take this opportunity to express my solidarity with him and wish him a speedy recovery. I take this opportunity to bow in memory of the dead compatriots and I wish speedy recovery to the injured." Toure said.

So far 11 persons have died and 158 others are injured, according to an official of a Bamako based hospital.

Doumbia was part of the Mali squad at the 2019 U23 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
