Man City and Newcastle 'eyeing 18-year-old Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellistri'

Manchester City and Newcastle United are trailing highly-rated young winger Facundo Pellistri.

The 18-year-old Uruguayan has been earning rave reviews with his performances for Penarol's first team, who are coached by former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan.

Indeed, last year's break-out season for the quicksilver teenager known as 'Facu' has drawn approaches from the likes of Real Madrid, Atletico, Napoli and Boca Juniors.

Real have previously plundered Penarol to sign Federico Valverde and are in little doubt skilful Pellistri can make a similar impact.

Forlan holds him in such esteem that he had handed Pellistri the coveted Number 10 jersey for this season prior to coronavirus curtailing the campaign.

City are well placed in the pursuit though.

They have a full-time scout based in Uruguay, plus Montevideo City Torque under their company umbrella, and are understood to have already held discussions with Pellistri's representatives to put themselves ahead of the competition.

While he has undoubted talent, Pellistri, who is valued at £10million, would most likely be viewed as one for the future at City rather than ready-made for the first team. Should they follow up their interest with a successful offer he may be loaned out initially.

Newcastle for their part have had equally glowing reports on the skilful youngster. They would like to bring him to the Premier League now but the delay over the club's sale means their pitch to Pellistri's family and representatives remains on hold.

Wolves have also asked about Pellistri as they consider options to potentially replace Adama Traore.

Discussing Pellistri's potential earlier this year, Forlan told Fox Sports' Joga Bonito: 'Pellistri has huge potential. There is still a lot to work on. He is growing and he makes a difference. We know it will be difficult to keep him for a long time. He has great pace and that is hard to handle.'
