Man Utd confirm signing of free agent Sophie Baggaley

Manchester United Women have confirmed the arrival of goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old spent the past four seasons on the books at Bristol City, leading the Women's Super League in saves in each of her last two campaigns at Twerton Park, but left upon the expiry of her contract this summer.

Links between United and Baggaley first began a few months ago, and the club took to their official website to confirm that the England international has finally put pen to paper on a contract at Leigh Sports Village.

“It’s a great feeling to sign for Manchester United; a fresh new start for me and I’m looking forward to settling in and really putting the work in ahead of the new season," said Baggaley.

"I know the goalkeeping department at the club is strong and everyone is here to compete which will really help me push on in my own development. I can’t wait to get started; I want to be part of success at this club and make the fans proud.”

Baggaley joins the club to provide competition for current starter Mary Earps, who penned a new contract back in February after impressing upon United's return to the top of the women's game.

Football Director John Murtough added: “Sophie is another fantastic signing and will strengthen the goalkeeping department at the club which has always been fiercely competitive. She has lots of experience in this league and will be a great addition to this group of players. We’re looking forward to seeing her develop here at United.”

Baggaley's arrival comes on the same day as United confirmed the signing of defender Hannah Blundell, who joined the club as part of the deal which took young forward Lauren James to WSL champions Chelsea.

United are looking to close the gap to Emma Hayes' Chelsea and cross-town rivals Manchester City, and they are hoping to get things back on track after a tumultuous few months which saw manager Casey Stoney leave the club.

Stoney has since joined NWSL side San Diego, leaving United searching for someone new to take charge ahead of the 2021/22 season. Marc Skinner is expected to take the role, with an agreement thought to have been reached.
