Man Utd identify Christopher Nkunku as summer transfer target

Manchester United are ready to act on advice from interim manager Ralf Rangnick to step up interest in RB Leipzig midfielder Christopher Nkunku in the summer.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed some outstanding seasons in the Bundesliga and is in the form of his life right now, having racked up 19 goals and 13 assists in 31 appearances in all competitions for Leipzig so far in 2021/22.

That form is yet to attract the interest of France manager Didier Deschamps, but Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal have all been keeping a very close eye on Nkunku.

ESPN add United to that list of suitors. It's claimed that the Red Devils weren't really interested in Nkunku last year, but Rangnick has argued his case since moving to Old Trafford in December and club officials have listened closely.

Rangnick, who signed Nkunku for Leipzig in 2019, sees the Frenchman as an elite, goalscoring playmaker who can shine in a number of different positions on the pitch, and he has convinced United to look at the former Paris Saint-Germain star more closely.

United will prioritise midfield signings in the summer as they prepare themselves for the departure of Paul Pogba when his contract expires, and Nkunku is now under serious consideration.

Leipzig are well aware of the immense interest in Nkunku, whose contract runs until 2024, and have already warned suitors that they do not plan to sell.

"[Nkunku] will also play with us next season because of course he is a very important player," Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff told Sky Deutschland.

"In football nothing is ever certain, but that's our plan. We don't have many players who can leave us in the summer. We want to strengthen the team rather than weaken it."
