Louis van Gaal says Manchester United's chances of finishing in the top four this season rest in their own hands.
The Red Devils defeated crosstown rivals Manchester City 1-0 in the 154th Manchester derby in the league to go within a point of Manuel Pellegrini's men who occupy fourth spot.
Regarding United's chase for a Champions League finish, van Gaal was happy that his players now have more control over the situation with eight fixtures remaining in the 2015/16 season.
"I have said in advance that we must win this game and we have done it, so I am very happy because otherwise the gap was too big if they won," van Gaal said.
"Or a draw is still four points, eight matches to go, so then it should be very difficult.
"Now it is in our own hands, I think. We have to win our games, we have more home matches than away matches.
"We don't lose so much at Old Trafford so we have a big chance."
Teenage striker Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the contest at the Etihad Stadium with a lovely finish in the 16th minute to give his side all three points.
