MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 24: Yaya Toure

Former Ivory Coast international and Manchester City legend, Yaya Toure, has backed the idea of playing the FIFA World Cup biennially.

According to the four times African footballer of the year, it will help the continent develop and players from Africa will be able to compete at the highest level on a regular basis.

The idea playing the World Cup every two years came to the fore through a proposal by for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Toure's decision to support the idea comes after Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick disclosed that African football will have a major facelift if the competition is played regularly.

“Playing the World Cup every two years will help Africa to develop and it’s crucial for African players to compete more at the highest level to gain valuable experiences. I want to see African countries and players to achieve more at the biggest stage,” Toure tweeted.

Meanwhile, earlier Amaju Pinnick stated the importance of a biennial World Cup.

“Competition at the highest level helps less developed countries to raise their level, it is a fact,” said President Pinnick.

“It increases their experience and helps them learn from their mistakes. It is also an essential means of rallying a country and its main players to a goal, including supporters, sports authorities and governments.

"When people can see that a result is achievable, that it is realistic and that everyone can seriously commit to it.”
