Manchester City not convinced by Nelson Semedo

Nelson Semedo has been placed on the transfer list following a breakdown in talks to extend his contract at Barcelona.

His current deal expires in 2022 and the board are hoping to cash in on him this summer before his value decreases significantly next year.

Barcelona have offered the right-back to clubs all over Europe and are looking for a bid in the region of 40 million euros for him.

Juventus and Inter are two candidates to sell him to given the Blaugrana's respective interest in Miralem Pjanic and Lautaro Martinez.

The third club Barcelona have held talks with over the sale of Semedo is Manchester City.

Semedo has been offered to City by his agent Jorge Mendes as part of a possible swap deal that would see another of his clients, Joao Cancelo, move to the Camp Nou.

However, City aren't interested in doing business. They don't deem the swap deal to be clear enough.

Barcelona also offered Semedo to the Premier League holders in January, but the response then was negative too.

At no point have City ever entered discussions to sign the Portuguese international.

Furthermore, swapping Semedo for Cancelo would get rid of the former, but it wouldn't benefit Barcelona in any major way going forward.

You also have to take into account that, having signed Cancelo for 65 million euros last summer, City would be losing money if they were to swap him for a player worth 40 million euros now.

It's not an easy deal to do in the current market and that's why there have been no talks between the two clubs over it.

As a result, Semedo is closer to Italy than Manchester.

Both Juventus and Inter could do with strengthening at right-back, meaning Semedo could be used in deals to sign either Pjanic or Lautaro.

If not, there's also a swap deal that could be done between Juventus and Barcelona involving Mattia de Sciglio, who would be a like-for-like replacement for Semedo at the Camp Nou and vice versa.

After all, letting Semedo go would leave Barcelona needing to sign a replacement at right-back, with Sergi Roberto the only remaining player in the squad, other than the on-loan Moussa Wague, that could play in that position.
