Mane dreams of winning Ballon d'Or but rejects PL Player of the Year claim

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has expressed his desire to win the Ballon d'Or - but doesn't believe he deserves to be PFA Player of the Year.

Mane has been among the Reds' star performers since arriving from Southampton for £30million in June 2016.

His performances last season, when Liverpool won the European Cup and he reached the Africa Cup of Nations final with Senegal, saw him finish fourth in the Ballon d'Or voting behind eventual winner Lionel Messi.

And Mane is determined to follow the Argentine in winning the prestigious honour.

“I'm playing for the team, and the team is most important and I'm really happy to win trophies with my team but at the same time it has been my dream to win the Ballon d'Or,” he said to The Times.

“I wish to win it and I sacrifice everything possible to win it.

"I have been close and that gives me more motivation and the people never stop supporting me, telling me I can do it... I think we are close and I will win it one day.”

Mane, however, does not believe he should be named PFA Player of the Year for his excellent displays in the Premier League this season.

He told talkSPORT: “I would go for (Jordan) Henderson. He's been a big part of our success this year, both defensively and in attack.

“He was really good this year. A really good leader and a great captain.”
