Manolas: Roma lacked confidence against Real Madrid

Published on: 09 March 2016

Following Roma’s Champions League defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Roma defender Kostas Manolas said his team needed to play with more confidence and regretted the fact that Roma was unable to convert several chances.

Roma failed to convert several scoring opportunities during both of their 2-0 defeats to Madrid, and exit the Champions League on a 4-0 aggregate. The Italians will now turn their attention to Serie A, in the hopes of securing qualification for the Champions League next year.

“We proved we could play at their level, but they scored and we didn’t,” Manolas told Roma TV.

“We need to play with more confidence, because if you play with fear against Real Madrid, you will lose.

“I don’t think Real Madrid is that much stronger than us. We created many clear scoring opportunities, but we couldn’t convert them, and so we lost.

“Whenever you lose, there is no such thing as a great performance. We are Roma, when we lose we are just angry.”
