Marchisio leaves Zenit Saint Petersburg

Former Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio has left Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg after just one season with the side, the club have announced.

Zenit took to Twitter to confirm the mutual termination of the 33-year-old’s contract just halfway through his two-year deal.

Marchisio’s time with the club was blighted by injury meaning he only made nine appearances in the league, four of which came from the bench, and five appearances in the Europa League.

The former Italy international has recently been visiting the J Medical centre in Turin for check-ups on a knee injury which he underwent surgery for in April.

In spite of his injuries, he still helped Zenit to the Russian Premier League title, taking his total of league championships to nine in an illustrious career.

Marchisio will now become a free agent and it is unclear as of yet where he will be plying his trade next season.
