Ghana's No. 1

Marcus Rashford has timed his comeback to perfection as he aims to gatecrash World Cup

Published on: 28 September 2022

Marcus Rashford has been one of the star performers for Manchester United this season.

The forward endured a hugely frustrating 2021-22 campaign, in the wake of England's European Championship final defeat to Italy.

His form was below-par and injuries resulted in starting just 13 of his 25 league games last term. He also endured a frustrating time of it in front goal, posting his lowest-ever goals tally for a Premier League campaign with just four strikes registered. But after pressing the reset button in the summer, Rashford has returned with a point to prove both for club and country.

He's worked his way into Erik ten Hag's starting line-up and has rewarded his new manager with three goals in six Premier League starts.

That form threatened to see him recalled to the England squad only for injury to scupper his chances of a first appearance for the Three Lions since that aforementioned shoot-out defeat to the Italians at Wembley 14 months ago.

But Gareth Southgate fired Rashford a World Cup lifeline last week when he said: "Marcus Rashford, for example, has shown some encouraging signs recently. He is a player we know well so if he can perform at a high level in the next few weeks, he of course will be under consideration."

Having sat out the recent Europa League double-header, Rashford should be fit and firing on all cylinders on Sunday for the 188th Manchester derby. What better way for him to return to action after almost a month without a game than to notch against United's bitter rivals? Should he do so, it would add to strikes against Liverpool and Arsenal as he looks to continue his habit of turning up in the big games.

After a season in the wilderness, the 24-year-old is threatening to get back to his very best. And when it comes to his chances of gate-crashing Southgate's World Cup squad, he looks as though he has timed it to perfection.
