Ex-Ghana coach Mariano Barreto says he regrets quitting his job 11 years ago.

The 58-year-old took over as Ghana coach in 2003.

But he quit in September 2004 after just nine months in charge, citing problems in communications with the country's football association.

Barreto was a popular figure during his time with the Black Stars but he says he regrets leaving the job at a time that he was soaring high.

“I took the wrong decision at that time. I accept but I took it. I could have stayed and fought and got the change," he told Accra-based Starr FM

"In football, when you win then you have power. I was winning but I did not use my power.

The Portuguese went on to coach Portuguese side Maritimo and several other clubs in Europe including Russian sides Dynamo Moscow and Kuban Krasnador.
