Mata: We know if we perform at our best level, we can compete with Liverpool

Juan Mata said there is a confidence in the Manchester United dressing room that they can go to Anfield and cause an upset on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side go into the game hoping to become the first side to beat Liverpool in the league since Crystal Palace back in April 2017 and given United are the only side to take points off the league leaders this season there's an air of confidence that they can do it again.

"We know if we perform at our best level, we can compete with them, like we did at Old Trafford, when they got only one point," Mata said after the win against Wolves on Wednesday night. "So from Thursday morning we will be 100 per cent focused on that game. It's a very special game for us, for all of the Manchester United fans and everyone in the club, so a big weekend ahead and hopefully we can bring with us this good moment of good football and results."

Jurgen Klopp's side sit 14 points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand and there's already an acceptance from many that they will win the Premier League trophy for the first time and despite the inevitable looming, Mata thinks a win at Anfield on Sunday and ending their rivals' unbeaten run will give the away following something to be cheerful about.

“We always try to make our fans happy. Sometimes we don't play good and when that happens they're understandably not happy, but if we win on Sunday, of course I think they will be very happy," Mata said.

And the Spaniard knows what it feels like to be the hero at Anfield. Back in 2015 he scored twice to cap off a memorable performance and it's something fans still talk to him about now but Mata wants to focus on the present rather than looking back at the past.

"I guess it's difficult, if you score at Anfield, for United fans to forget about that. But the years go by and there's another opportunity now to play a very special game," he said. "Of course, they are on an incredible run and have confidence, but we will give ourselves a good chance."
