2020/21 Ghana Premier League: Week 1 Preview - Legon Cities vs. Berekum Chelsea

Published on: 11 November 2020

Legon Cities FC will be starting their 2020/2021 campaign from home at the Accra Sports stadium when they entertain Berekum Chelsea.

Cities with their massive recruitments will target a resounding victory in their season's opener on Saturday night.

The nouveau-riche pulled the biggest signing in the transfer window by adding Ghana's all-time Asamoah Gyan to the squad for this term.

Cities completed the signing of the 2010 BBC African Footballer of year on the transfer deadline day.

Gyan's experience together with the signings of Elvis Opoku, Jonah Attuquaye, Mathew Anim-Cudjoe, Foster Braimah, Baba Mahama amongst others make the Royals contenders for the ultimate this season.

Goran Barjaktarevic's side were 15th positioned in the league last season when it was truncated with three wins from 15 games.

Berekum Chelsea on the other hand would be seeking to repeat their amazing start to the premiership last season having beaten Hearts of Oak in the opening day at the Accra Sports stadium.

Ironically, the scorer of the match winner Attuquaye in that fixture has switched camp to Cities.

Chelsea also go into the game without three key members of their squad last season.

Goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim, skipper Zackaria Fuseini and experienced defender Ahmed Adams have all left the club.

But new coach Hesse Odamtten will be counting on the experiences of returnees Edward Kpodo and Jordan Opoku this campaign.

New signing James "Iniesta" Wiafe is in contention to make his debut for the Bibires in Saturday's encounter.
