2020/21 Ghana Premier League: Week 1 Preview - Ebusua Dwarfs vs Elmina Sharks

Published on: 15 November 2020

The first derby of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season will take place at the Cape Coast stadium as Ebusua Dwarfs host Elmina Sharks.

In recent seasons, the central regional derby has witnessed tough battles as no club wants to lose the maximum points at stake and also the bragging rights.

On Sunday, the tradition is expected to continue because it is the first game of the season and both teams have targeted a winning start.

This fixture is one that attracts a lot of fans but due to Covid-19 pandemic, only 25% of fans will be allowed into the 15,000-capacity stadium.

The two teams had a quiet pre-season. They both decided to camp in the Central Region.

Sharks’ only notable friendly match was against Hearts of Oak which they lost 1-0.

For Dwarfs, they did not engage any top-flight club with all their pre-season games coming against lower-tier sides.

Dwarfs despite being poor in the truncated 2019/20 season did not bring in many players.

They signed just two players, defender Godwin Adikah and midfielder George Asamoah.

Sharks, on the other hand, were busy in the market, signing four players including former Sekondi Eleven Wise midfielder, James Bissue and former Kotoko and TP Mazembe star, Daniel Nii Adjei.

The two especially Nii Adjei's wealth of experience will be beneficial to coach Yaw Acheampong’s side.

Sharks are confident of a great season, having excelled last term were they found themselves among the top four before the season was cancelled due to pandemic.

Dwarfs and Sharks have met six times since the latter became a top-flight club in 2017. Sharks have lost once and beaten Dwarfs twice with three meetings ending in stalemates.

Prediction: Ebusua Dwarfs 1-2 Elmina Sharks
