Matheus Pereira reveals desire to leave West Brom

Published on: 02 August 2021

Matheus Pereira has released a statement confirming that he wants to leave West Brom.

Pereira was one of the Baggies' best performers last season, registering 11 goals and six assists. His displays were not enough to guide West Brom away from relegation peril, though, with Sam Allardyce’s side eventually finishing 13 points adrift of safety.

Since then Pereira has been heavily linked with a move away from The Hawthorns with Leeds United and West Ham both interested in the forward. Over the weekend, new West Brom boss Valerien Ismael said that he would not play in his side’s Championship opener at Bournemouth as he is not committed to the club.

Pereira has taken issue with these comments, taking to social media to release a statement in defence of his actions.

“I remained silent and was not going to address anything until after the transfer window out of respect for the fans and all my team mates, however after being called ‘not committed’ with the club I felt extremely disrespected as a professional,” the statement read.

"Three weeks ago I received an offer that would change my life and my family's life for ever, I come from humble beginnings, slowly but shortly I've been building my self up and achieving things with a lot of hard work and dedication.

“To achieve financial freedom at 25 would be unimaginable. I want to leave I want to seek new experiences but want to do this in a fair and correct manner. I will forever be grateful to WBA, to its fans and every single professional that works at the club and that welcomed me with open arms, to those that cheered for me these last two seasons, you're part of my history! I'm a professional and will always respect that.”

Whether Pereira’s decision to go public will convince West Brom to sell remains to be seen. It is believed that the club want at least £25m for their prized asset.
