A solemn gathering was held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday to mark the 24th anniversary of the May 9th Stadium Disaster, which claimed 127 lives during a Premier League game between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in 2001.
The memorial ceremony drew together football administrators, government officials, families of the victims, and club representatives to remember the lives lost and recommit to ensuring stadiums remain safe.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Kofi Adams, reiterated the government's resolve to work with all stakeholders to prevent future tragedies.
GFA President Kurt Okraku echoed similar sentiments, noting that real tribute lies in concrete action. “The best way to honour those we lost is to ensure it never happens again. Through improved regulations and infrastructure, we are building safer grounds for our fans,” he stated.
The event ended with prayers and the laying of wreaths at the May 9th Monument—a quiet, emotional gesture that spoke louder than words.
