Former Asante Kotoko chairman Herbert Mensah says the May 9th stadium disaster left a deep and lasting mark on his life.

Speaking today to mark the anniversary of the tragedy, Mensah shared how the events of that day continue to affect him personally. At the time of the incident in 2001, he was leading Kotoko during a fierce rivalry game against Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The match ended in disaster when police fired tear gas into the stands to control the crowd, causing a stampede that led to the deaths of 127 fans, Ghana’s worst football tragedy.

“On a personal note the impact on my life is immeasurable it comes not with the incident itself the terrible occurrence itself. The imagery of which I have spoken about it on so many occasions the evening, the rainfall the smell of teargas the look off anguish on the face of many," as aired by Peace FM.

"The confusion the smell of anger, fear and annoyance the emotions are just too many the touch and feel of bodies alive a touch and feel of bodies no more. the impact of me and those close to me is lasting,”
