Hearts of Oak goalkeepers’ trainer Abubakar Damba has hailed the recall of Philemon McCarthy to the Black Stars.

The 28-year-old had consistently been overlooked for a place in the national team despite impressing  in post for Hearts over the past three years.

But the former Feyernood shot-stopper finally got his breakthrough after a two-year absence after he was named in a 21-man squad released by coach Kwesi Appiah ahead of the  the return fixture of the 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi on October 13.

The former Ghana goalkeeper who has long been angling for the player’s recall into the team is delighted with the turn of event.

“I am thrilled with his (McCarthy’s) recall into the Black Stars. It is long overdue because he is in top shape,” Damba told Accra-based Happy FM

“I have always insisted that I have the best crop of goalkeepers in the country and I will implore the handlers to call more of them.

“It is now up to him to step up his game and show his capabilities."

McCarthy is regarded by many as a competent first choice goalie for the national team and must fight to dislodge Adam Kwarasey.
