McGowan makes A-League return

Australia international defender Dylan McGowan is returning to the A-League with Western Sydney Wanderers.

The former Adelaide United central defender has signed a three-year deal with Markus Babbel's team, following a stint in Denmark with Vendsyssel.

He becomes Wanderers' fifth signing of the off-season, arriving a week after the 2014 Asian Champions League winners brought in Polish midfielder Radoslaw Majewski.

I have been successful here before and want to be again at the Wanderers.

McGowan, who started his career in Scotland with Hearts, is the second defender to join ahead of the new season, with Babbel having already brought in Daniel Georgievski from Newcastle Jets.

The 27-year-old said: "I'm delighted to be joining the Wanderers; it's a really exciting time for the club with things like moving into the new stadium and the team the coach is building. I'm looking forward to being a part of that and bringing success to the club.

"Coming back to Australia is the right decision for myself and my family. I have been successful here before and want to be again at the Wanderers."

McGowan won the A-League double with Adelaide in 2015-16, and helped them win the inaugural FFA Cup in 2014.

He played 82 league games overall for the Reds before leaving in 2017 to join Portuguese Primeira Liga side Pacos de Ferreira.

McGowan made his one Socceroos appearance in a 4-0 defeat to Brazil in June 2017.

He has been signed as a replacement for departed skipper Brendan Hamill, who has joined newcomers Western United.

Wanderers veteran forward Mark Bridge retired at the end of last season and the club have had 12 other departures since then including midfielders Roly Bonevacia - who moved to Al-Faisaly - and Alexander Baumjohann.

Western Sydney are 12/1 to win the 2020 Grand Final.

Meanwhile, Australia are 13/10 to win their next game at the Women's World Cup against Norway, who are 9/5 with the draw 13/5.
