Messi and Ramos the only Barcelona and Real Madrid nominees for UEFA Men's TOTY

Published on: 01 December 2020

UEFA has officially opened the voting on their website for fans to choose the best XI from 2020, yet there are only two representatives from either Real Madrid or Barcelona in the form of Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos.

Gone are the days when the selection would be full to the brim of Clasico stars, with the two veterans now the only two remaining from the aforementioned glory years.

There is a list of 50 players for the UEFA Men's Team of the Year, which consists of 10 Bayern Munich representatives.

Liverpool have eight nominees in the list, whilst Germany as a nation has six nominated players.

Cristiano Ronaldo makes it too, while LaLiga Santander is also represented by Joao Felix, Jan Oblak and Ever Banega in addition to Ramos and Messi.

The youngest of all is Bayern Munich superstar Alphonso Davies, then Erling Haaland. Thiago Silva, now at Chelsea, is the oldest player on the list at 36 years old.

Candidates have been nominated by UEFA's editorial team based on their performances in UEFA competitions between January and December 2020.

The UEFA Women's Team of the Year

In the female category, Lyon have 13 players on the list, whilst France completely dominates proceedings with 10 national team players on the list and 19 players who represent French teams.

Barcelona forwards Caroline Graham, Jenni Hermoso and Asisat Oshoala made the selection, whilst they were joined by teammates Kheira Hamraoui, Alexia Putellas, Mapi Leon and Marta Torrejon.
