Ghana midfielder Michael Essien proved his worth with glistening 90 minutes treat in Chelsea's slender 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho restored his confidence in the 31-year-old and picked him ahead of Nigerian midfielder John Mikel Obi in central midfield and he glittered throughout the entire duration of the game.

Though manager Jose Mourinho defended him after an uninspiring first-half performance against Southampton in early December, many ruled out the probability of Mourinho fielding the Ghanaian.

But he was restored to his favourite position on the field - central midfield Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon in a must-win tie for Chelsea who recorded a slender 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

A glimmer of Essien's raw physique was seen when he crashed a Palace midfielder leading to booking from the center referee.

Spanish international Fernando Torres and Brazilian Ramirez got the goals for Chelsea with Moroccan Maroune Chamakh scoring the consolation for the visitors.

Chelsea manager Mourinho has confirmed he will add Essien to his Uefa Champions League squad for the next round of the competition after initially omitting him from his list for the group stages.
