Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien will hit the ground running as an assistant coach of Danish top-flight side Nordsjaelland on Friday.

The 37-year-old will join the first team in training on Friday morning just 24 hours after being named Player Coach of the ambitious club.

He joins the technical team for the 2020/21 season, and will assist head coach Flemming Pedersen on the touchline.

Essien visited the club a fortnight ago, where he discussed a possible coaching role with the Wild Tigers.

He has been training as a manager since moving to Azerbaijan to play for Sabail FK and coaching their youth side.

"The former Black Star and pro player, Michael Essien, is joining our coaching staff this season," FC Nordsjaelland posted on their Twitter handle.

"He’s gonna assist the coaches and participate in the training sessions alongside the players," the club added.

Michael Essien joins compatriot Mas Ud Didi Dramani, who has also been on the technical team since last season.

The Danish club have the largest Ghanaian contingent in Europe, with youngster Kamaldeen Suleimana, Ibrahim Sadiq, Maxwell Woledzi, Clinton Antwi and Godsway Donyoh on the roaster of the club.

Head coach Fleming Pedersen said,"We experienced Michael Essien as both curious and willing to learn among the coaches before and after the training sessions, but at the same time also contributing and rewarding among the players during the training itself.

"His career and experience speak for themselves, but when you add his humble and rewarding personality, it is a unique opportunity for us to get someone into the coaching staff who can make our environment even more evolving for our players and while providing valuable input to the coaching staff and being our extended arm on the training ground. We are very much looking forward to having Michael on board the FCN."
