Massive blow for Ghana as Michael Essien is ruled out of World Cup

Ghana suffered a severe blow to their chances at the World Cup after key midfielder Michael Essien was ruled out of next month's World Cup.

The Chelsea star was out ruled after Ghanasoccernet exclusively that a final meeting between both parties on Thursday  will determine whether he will be fit for the tournament in South Africa.

Black Stars team doctor Dr. Percy Annan met with his Chelsea counterparts to examine the x-rays and medical reports on before he was physically examined.

There was a slight hope that he could recover but when Essien undressed and his knee was examined by the Ghana team doctor and officials it was concluded that the enforcer could not play.

"The joint evaluation on the player revealed he gain regain his full fitness at the end of July," the Ghana Football Association said in a statement after the meeting.

Essien suffered an injury to his knee at the Africa Cup of Nations in January this year and has been inactive for the last four months.

He missed the African Championship due to an injury sustained before the turn of the year in a Uefa Champions League match.
