Mick McCarthy is set to replace Neil Harris as manager of Cardiff City.
McCarthy was sacked as manager of Cypriot side APOEL at the start of January after just two months in the job but the 61-year old has vast experience in the Championship having previously won promotion with Sunderland and Wolves.
Cardiff have lost seven out of their last eight games in all competitions and face a tough task to push themselves back into the promotion chase as they languish in 15th place in the Championship table.
Harris was sacked after their defeat by QPR on Wednesday despite Cardiff signing striker Max Watters and full-back Perry Ng at the start of the week.
Coaches such as former Wigan boss Paul Cook and ex-Reading manager Mark Bowen are also under consideration for what remains a well sought after post but McCarthy’s no-nonsense approach and track record pushed the former Republic of Ireland boss to the forefront.
McCarthy's last job in English football was with Ipswich Town. The 61-year-old left at the end of the 2017-2018 campaign and the club were relegated the following season.
He then spent two years in charge of the Republic of Ireland national team before standing down in April last year.
Harris guided the Bluebirds to the play-offs last season, where they were defeated in the semi-final by eventual winners Fulham.
The club are 13 points off sixth place with a game in-hand and nine points above the relegation zone.
Cardiff made some promising signings in the summer with Kieffer Moore arriving from Wigan and Harry Wilson joining on loan from Liverpool.
Moore is the club's top scorer with eight goals with Joe Ralls on four and Wilson on three.
