Mighty Jets supporters worried over bias officiating

Published on: 02 December 2011

Despite the victory over Liberty on Thursday and the six-week ban slapped on referee Fred Donkor for disallowing a goal they scored against Dwarfs, Tudu Mighty Jets supporters are unhappy over what they call bias refereeing decisions against them.

They want the Ghana FA to clamp down further on dodgy decisions by referees to level the playing ground for all clubs in the top-flight.

Below is an article by supporter of the club Charlotte Iddrissu.

From the commencement of the 2011 Glo Premier League, Tudu Mighty Jets which is in its second year of playing in the elite division of Ghana's League has been saddled with serious officiating problems which call for concern for all football loving fans.

There is no doubt that Tudu Mighty Jets is playing some scintillating football and the boys are a delight to watch.

All the top teams like Kotoko, Hearts, Chelsea, All Stars and Dwarfs will testify to this. Fantastic players like Tamimu Muntari, Inusah Musah, Mubarak Sinare, Eli Agbeko and Nuru Sulley are creating waves by their brand of football.

However, if you look at the current position of Tudu Mighty Jets on the league table, one wonders what is happening to the only zongo club in the Premiership.

Critically looking at events, one comes to the firm conclusion that Tudu Mighty Jets is being frustrated by match officials.

Out of 8 matches that Tudu Mighty Jets have played so far this season, officials in 5 of these matches have been reprimanded for poor officiating all to the disadvantage of the Tudu club.

In the first match of the season against champions Berekum Chelsea, referee S.D. Bortey was banned for ignoring an obvious penalty in favour of Tudu Mighty Jets.

Referee Solomon Morday was next to be banned for again ignoring an obvious penalty against Hearts of Oak on match day 2.

Charles Nii Tagoe was next to be sanctioned for poor performance and allowing an obvious off-side goal in the 96th minute in favour of Asante Kotoko.

In the match against Dwarfs, referee Sylvester Adjoku and his assistant Fred Odonkor were banned for disallowing a perfect goal scored by Tudu Mighty Jets.

The latest official to face the Referees Review Committee in a match involving Tudu Mighty Jets is referee Kyeremanteng who gave a very soft and dubious penalty in the 94th minute to allow Aduana Stars beat Tudu Mighty Jets by a lone goal at Dormaa Ahenkro.

Something must be obviously wrong for so many match officials to be sanctioned in matches involving a particular club. A little bit of mathematics will show that these match officials have cost Tudu Mighty Jets probably 10 points.

Assuming these points are added to the 6 points Tudu Mighty Jets have so far amassed, they could  have been topping the table by now. Coincidentally, the top five teams in the league have so far all benefitted from the bias officiating against Tudu Mighty Jets.

One wonders whether these match officials are venting their spleens on Tudu Mighty Jets to spite the CEO of the club who happens to be Chairman of the Referees Review Committee.

Is it a question of "you sanction us and we punish your club"? Isn't it a shame that the good effort of the Anagblah review committee to fight bad officiating in Ghana football is being thwarted by some match officials who are bent on tarnishing the reputation of the Knights of the Whistle?

As it is now, the sanctions do not go far enough. Guilty officials should be given life bans or be demoted and be made to pay hefty monetary fines in addition.

This will dispel rumours circulating that certain clubs are paying these match officials huge sums of money.

These match officials are therefore not perturbed by the few weeks' bans as they make it up with the huge monetary gains.

The PLB together with Referees Appointment Committee should ensure that Tudu Mighy Jets' matches are handled by very competent officials to dispel this purported notion of victimization by association.

The statistics so far are overwhelmingly lopsided in favour of this theory of victimization.
