Mihajlovic: AC Milan on course for Champions League

After defeating Genoa 2-1 at the Giuseppe Meazza on Sunday afternoon AC Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic praised his side for a professional performance against the visitors and is looking for a Champions League finish.

The Rossoneri took an early lead through Carlos Bacca before Keisuke Honda doubled their lead, but wasted the chance of a cleansheet when Alessio Cerci netted in injury-time.

“We had to win and we did,” Mihajlovic said.

“We played well, suffering very little in defence. We had to try and get a third goal, but had hoped to without conceding.”

The Serbian tactician highlighted that it was the type of clinical finish that convinced the club to purchase the Colombian, but will be an even greater attacking force with the return of Mario Balotelli and Jeremy Menez.

“Bacca has scored the kind of goal that is in his blood,” claimed the 46-year-old. “We already knew his qualities, the money has been well spent.

“There are many things to improve, with Balotelli and Menez returning we will have more offensive options and will be more difficult for the other teams.

“Montolivo gives us so much balance, he is the best in Italy for recovery of balls.

“Honda is also doing OK. In the past it has been challenging, but with determination and desire you can get to great things.

“We are on course for qualification to the Champions League, putting pressure our opponents.”

While the former Sampdoria coach believes they could now finish third or higher in Serie A, they face a Napoli side hurt by their loss to Juventus next time out.

“Napoli will be a difficult game,” admitted Mihajlovic. “However, we will play our game as always.

“It will be a complicated match for them.”
