Millar is eighth Mariners signing

Published on: 10 July 2018

Former Melbourne City winger Matthew Millar has signed for Central Coast Mariners for the 2018/19 A-League season.

Millar has been on trial with the Gosford club in an effort to get back to the top level after a two-year spell in the NPL Victoria. The utility made four first-team appearances for City during his brief stint with the club.

He was signed before the start of the 2015/16 campaign but left in mid-season to sign for South Melbourne.

The 21-year-old, who has scored 17 goals in his 55 games for the NPL side, becomes the eighth signing of the off-season by new Mariners coach Mike Mulvey.

Since being appointed in April, the former Brisbane Roar coach has been rebuilding a squad that has lost 10 players including Dutch midfielder Wout Brama and Spanish defender Alan Baro. He's recruited former Mariners midfielder Michael McGlinchey following his exit from Wellington Phoenix.

The New Zealand international is returning to the club for a second spell while striker Matt Simon has signed on for a third stint after leaving Sydney FC.

Central Coast are 75/1 to win the 2018/19 minor premiership.

Meanwhile, Wellington are on the verge of signing former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor. The 32-year-old former England B international spent 13 years with Newcastle, playing 215 games.

He played in the Championship with Ipswich Town after a short stint in the USA with Portland Timbers and last season played 44 league games for Peterborough United.

Peterborough confirmed on Monday that manager Steve Evans had given Taylor permission to travel to Wellington to discuss personal terms over the proposed move.

The Phoenix are 33/1 to win the 2018/19 Grand Final.
