MLS and Liga MX Teams will lock horns

It was in the talks between the responsible bodies from both soccer leagues to have a combined tournament engaging top teams from the Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX.

The discussions are fruitful and we can expect the new cup competition to begin in between the 2019 regular season.

It was not fully a new idea as we have a SuperLiga experience from the past where the teams from both leagues played each other in a cup competition (2007–2010).

Unfortunately, it didn’t go so long as the fourth edition of the tournament saw the official announcement coming about the closing of the competition.

The scheduling conflicts created due to the introduction of CONCACAF Champions League lead to finally dissolve the SuperLiga tournament.

The behind the scene works are in progress to start the MLS – Liga MX competition this year, well ahead of its previously planned time, we have the words of Don Garber, the Commissioner of MLS, to confirm that.

Tournament Name and Format

The tournament is yet to get named and we don’t have any information about its format either. We can expect the official announcement to come soon about what and how everything is going to be planned.

Though, we can understand that the tournament will have four leading teams from each league as participants.

The relevant bodies are in talks to plan the competition during the next Apertura stage of the Liga MX and around the second half of the next MLS season.

This new cup competition not only gets introduced with an aim to improve the sports partnership between these two leagues but the progress in the relationship among the people from both countries as well.

It’s needed to create such a friendly atmosphere among them, especially considering the fact the 2026 FIFA World Cup is going to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Let’s wait for the players to cross boundaries, play beautiful games, and contribute to building a sports relationship that interests fans across the nations…!
